“GolfSixes!” In 2018, The East Lothian Junior Golf League is piloting a “GolfSixes” event for the Golf Foundation. All reports from David Noon or Lesley Nicholson.
From Lesley (Club Development Officer, East Lothian, Midlothian, Scottish Borders) – “Just following up on the previous emails, many thanks to all the those who have been involved in organising the GolfSixes teams for the first national pilot. I will keep you posted on the roll out of this for next year but in the meantime following up on comments that it would be great to see the matches continue over the autumn/winter period if the organisers at each club be happy to get together and arrange some dates and times. These can either be posted to me at my home address: 41 Rowanhill Drive, Port Seton, EH32 0SX or scanned/emailed to me.
Can I please ask you get this information to me by Monday 22 October at the latest so I can follow this up with The Golf Foundation. Any questions please do not hesitate to ask!
From Ric Foulner. “I know I haven’t been able to make any of the events this year but I have read all the reports and it looks like it was a huge success – to all the team leaders who have volunteered their time and to Lesley, Kate and David, a massive thanks for organising all the dates and I have no doubt that this is the way forward for clubs to get Juniors involved and make them feel part of a team environment and part of the club of which they are members.”
“The 5th GolfSixes event was held at Gullane GC on Sunday the 9th September. The Putting competition had joint winners – Harris Munro (Haddington) and Rory McArdle. In the actual GolfSixes event there was a Tie – 1st equal – Gullane and Haddington – 135 points. 3rd – West Links – 129 points. Many thanks to everyone for their help today, especially to Katy for organising the scorecards, putting competition and catering.
“A quick update on the 4th GolfSixes event from North Berwick Wee Course on 2nd September. Thanks to Ric Foulner for booking the course for us. We had 3 full teams West Links, Haddington and Gullane. The weather was excellent. The points this week went in favour of the home team – 1. West Links – 139, 2. Haddington – 137, 3. Gullane – 134. We used the first hole as a nearest the pin contest. This was won by Murray Bowsher (Haddington) who came within inches of having our first hole in one. The 8th hole was our other prize hole, we changed this slightly from a longest drive to a very long ‘nearest the green/pin’ this made the kids think about the shot a bit more. This was won by Lucy Thomas from Gullane who just rolled through the green. Excellent shot! Lesley took some pictures which I’m sure will be forwarded on to you. Thanks again to Lesley, Veronica and all the parent volunteers.”
Update – see news article with comments from Scottish Golf’s CEO. “The launch of “GolfSixes” in East Lothian took place at the Wee Course at North Berwick on Sunday the 24th June involving 4 Clubs, each with 6 Players. Unfortunately, The Glen and Musselburgh were unable to field a Team. Results:- 1st Craigielaw 139, 2nd equal Gullane and Haddington 135, 4th West Links 131. Photos below this article. The longest drive was by Daryl Yuill (Craigielaw) and nearest the pin was won by Ryan Pirie (Haddington.) David Noon the “GolfSixes” organiser for the Junior League, expressed his thanks to Lesley Nicholson of Scottish Golf, Kate Green from East Lothian Council, several PGA Assistants and the many Parents who assisted in the running of the event. Everyone enjoyed juice and snacks in the North Berwick Clubhouse afterwards. The proposed dates for future “GolfSixes” events, and details of the competition format can be found below. The dates are also on our Events Calendar here. The League is extremely grateful to have received funding from the Golf Foundation (GF) through the HSBC Golf Roots project. This will assist in various aspects – trophies and prizes for the Orders of Merit, coaching for our youngest Players, and paying for banners. The Golf Foundation has provided the Clubs involved with Players’ goody bags and shirts, with a “GolfSixes” League competition box, which includes tee markers, flags, clipboards, banner etc, and with resources for Golf Clubs which include handbooks, medals, balls etc.”

– Golf 6’s match refreshments provided by host club
– Support from the club’s Pro/Assistant pro to oversee running home Golf Sixes event (approx. 3 hours)
– 6 pre match coaching sessions with the club’s Pro/Assistant Pro for the Golf Six Team
– If 8 players pay £25 that would give clubs a £200 fund to cover the Pro’s time/running costs etc
