Championships 2023 – Results!

August 5, 2023 By Dave Warren

Results now updated below! Thanks to Longniddry GC for hosting all of our Players and for looking after us so well. Many thanks to our helpers, Peter Lowe, David Canavan and James Neil all from Longniddry, our Starter John Anderson, David Canavan and Steve Austin.  Thanks to the 47 Juniors who played and all the parents who attended and waited patiently for the prize givings. Only the main trophy winners in the Boys U18/16 received their prizes on the night, as much checking and writing out of vouchers needed to be done. Unclaimed prizes can be obtained at the next 3 Match Days, and Trophies will be engraved as soon as possible and then returned to you.

Considering the numbers of Prizes on offer, it was disappointing to not have more Players. So please put the date for our Championships next year in your diary, – at Dunbar Golf Club on Thursday the 8th August 2024!

Prize list and scores all listed below. The U18/U16 Boys list has been shown in both Scratch and Net orders to assist readers.

We amassed a lot of beautiful prizes, mostly Open Championship merchandise, kindly provided by the R&A, and which is worth a tidy £750! A list of these prizes and a photo now appears on our website here, along with the list of prize vouchers, which total £1400. This was also a qualifying event for the The Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship which can be accessed at telegraph.co.uk/juniorgolf  This event incorporated our annual Team Strokeplay event in which Clubs nominated a Team of 4 Players from whom the best 3 out of the 4 scores count. We have 3 Match Days left at Musselburgh, Gifford and The Glen, after which more prizes for the League winners, and the Scratch and Handicap Orders of Merit will be awarded. Check your OOM position on the App under season points – can you still get into a prize winning position? Dave Warren 07595 301425

The “flyer” for our annual ELJGL Championships is attached and the event is now open for entries using the Golf Genius App. The conditions of the competition and the age groups are all listed in the flyer. The a.m. round in our Championships will count as the qualifying round for the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship and for the annual ELJGL Team Strokeplay event. Junior Convenors will nominate their Strokeplay Team from the online entries received on Golf Genius. Teams of 4 will compete and the best 3 from 4 scratch scores will count towards the Team total. There will also be prizes for the best net Team and individual scores. Players can play for any Club in the League where they are members. They are not “Cup Tied” to the Team they play for in League Match Days. So please get your entries in for our Championship asap. There are some excellent prizes, and some winners will receive free tickets for the Walker Cup Matches at St. Andrews on the 2nd and 3rd September where the best Amateur Golfers from GB&I v. USA will play each other!

Girls’ Junior Framework!

Scottish Golf have recently announced by email their new funded pathway for “Girls to enter, stay and thrive in Golf.”  All Convenors should have received this through their Clubs, but I have sent it to all our Convenors just to be sure they see it.  The complete information on how to apply for funding etc is at this link

ELJGL Girls vs St Andrews!

Thanks to a former League Junior Kate Thomson, our League girls are going to play the St Andrews University Ladies’ Team over the Jubilee Course at St. Andrews on Saturday the 28th March at 1230. The Girls who have been selected to play are Phebe and Lydia Pickett, Louise Martin, Chloe Adam, Maisie Witt and Anna Zonova. This “friendly” match will be fourball better ball, with a handicap strokes to be given or received. There will be soup and sandwiches after the match in the One Under Bar, in the Rusacks Hotel. Jennifer Pickett, Mhairie Witt and Dave Warren will provide transport to and from the venue. Push trolleys will be available. Our golf is complimentary. A return match will be arranged in the Autumn. These matches will give our Girls a taste of Student life at St Andrews!  Dave will meet with Gareth Jack, former Junior Convenor at Longniddry, now working in St Andrews, and they will also have a game, but not quite as “friendly!”

Ava Paterson in Dubai!

Ava, a recent Junior at Kilspindie, and now a student at Heriot Watt University, was in touch with me recently. Ava told me she was heading to Dubai, where Heriot Watt have a Campus, for a semester from January till the Spring. Ava’s Mum Eleanor, asked me if I knew anyone in Dubai, as Ava had expressed the wish to help to coach Junior Golfers whilst she is there. I recalled that Euan Bowden, and Ryan Gallacher, both former ELJGL Juniors, were working in Dubai. I viewed the “Tommy Fleetwood Academy” website where I saw that both of them are working there as PGA Professionals – see their full Team here! So, I put them in touch with each other. I believe that Ava will be seeing both soon Ryan and Euan soon, but in the meantime, Ava has met the Boss! Good luck Ava!
