East Lothian Junior Golf League News

Fun Four-ball at Muss. Old

Please the latest draw attached for the ELJGL Fun Four-ball at Musselburgh Old GC on Wednesday commencing at 1100. Please also read the notes below the draw. Regards, Dave Warren, Jt League Secretary. 07595 301425. The scores and prizewinners from our Championships at Haddington can be seen elsewhere on this website.

The format is the best 2 net scores from the team of 4, at each hole, over 18 holes. A “Dream Team” of ELJGL Committee Members has been assembled to give the younger Teams a great chance not to be last! Players in any Teams beating or tying with the Committee Team’s scores will be awarded with a Muirfield Ball Marker. Players in the leading 3 Juniors Teams will receive a prize voucher. The Teams have been selected so that combined handicaps are all about the same. The Girls will play off Red Tees, the Boys off White tees and there are three younger Boys who will play off the Yellow Tees. Alan Tweedie, the host Convenor, will be first Reserve, but any other Convenors or Parents who are attending, who happen to have their kit with them, may substitute for any absent Player. Each Team will have a Captain who will keep a bespoke scorecard with room to mark the best 2 scores and each hole total.  There has been an earlier email with information about the day. I copy that in below.

27th June – Dear Players and Convenors, please see attached draw for the Fun Fourball on Wednesday the 1st July at the 9 hole Musselburgh Old GC, NB – the course in the Racecourse! The address is:- Musselburgh Links, The Old Golf Course. Stables Pavilion. Balcarres Road. Musselburgh. EH21 7SR. There is a small car park just opposite the MOCGC Clubhouse where Convenors may park. Players and Parents are advised to use the large car park at the Stables near the Starter’s Office/First tee. Players must register in the Starters Office, (follow the signs) at least 20 minutes before their tee time. Changing facilities will be limited. There are toilets in the Pavilion which can be visited after 9 holes.

There is no driving range but there is an area that can be used for chipping and there is a small practise putting green. As the 1st hole is a 240 yard Par 3, the group up at the green may be asked to step aside and allow the group behind to tee off. Volunteer members will be ball spotters on the 3rd and 4th holes to help with pace of play.

Play will be over 18 holes. The draw may be subject to change, so please check the Golf Genius App on Tuesday evening.

MOCGC scorecards will be issued to all Players, for information only. One Player in each Team will be asked to Captain the Team and they will be responsible for keeping a communal scorecard for all 4 Players.  That communal scorecard will be marked with how many strokes each Player will receive and at which holes.  The format is that ONLY the best 2 NET scores on each hole will count for each four-ball. So if you cannot contribute to the Team’s score, then you should pick up your ball to speed up play. Play “Ready Golf” as usual.

Scoring will be conducted in the Clubhouse of the MOCGC which is at Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club 10 Balcarres Road Musselburgh East Lothian Scotland EH21 7SD. It is a grey stone building opposite the entrance to the course. There will be a frieze/mural of former Open Champions, on their front wall. Use the side door for entry. The Clubhouse is full of history as you would expect from the world’s oldest golf course!

There is no catering available at the Pavilion. However you, and your parents, will all be invited to attend the MOCGC Clubhouse, The League will be paying for soft drinks and sandwiches for Players and Convenors after golf, so before you go out to play you will all be asked,  for your choice of sandwiches and drinks and these will be available for you in the Clubhouse, after your scores have been accepted. Please sit with your Team in the Clubhouse.

There will be a presentation of prizes soon after play has finished, so Teams are asked to remain until they know for certain that they are not in the 3 leading Teams, before leaving. There are prize vouchers worth a total of £300 for the 4 leading Teams.

Junior Open Season!

There are hundreds of Junior Opens every summer and if you are having a  holiday in the UK, and wish to try some different courses, then check out this website – “Golf Empire.”  This link takes you to the page listing JOs in the South East of Scotland which includes 6 of the venues in the ELJGL. These events would love to have your participation. Entering them is easy using the links on the Golf Empire website and entry fees are very affordable. When you are older you will wish you had played these courses – at these prices!

MD4 at Craigielaw – Results

These are the results of MD4 at Craigielaw. After 2 abandoned Match Days, it was great to see 77 Juniors out playing golf in good weather. Thanks are due to Craigielaw for hosting us and being very welcoming to the League! Thanks also to John Murdoch, Chris Barker, Iain Crawford and Scott Lothian for assisting on the day. We will need similar assistance at every MD this year, usually involving local Junior Convenors and other local volunteers.

Well done to both West Links Teams for consistently high scoring at Craigielaw, and to the Juniors with the best scratch and net individual scores. Prizes will be handed to winners at our next event. Individual and Team Scoring can be seen on your Golf Genius App. The League table, which can be viewed on this website, has been updated. Scores have been submitted to WHS.

Please remember to enter our next 3 events at Kilspindie, Winterfield and Haddington, using your Golf Genius App. Our annual League Championships are going to be held at Haddington on Sunday June the 29th. In view of the increased number of Players now registered with the League – now standing at 217, there may be a surplus of Players wishing to play in that event. There may have to be a ballot of Players by handicap indexes, in the various age groups. So please enter this event if you wish to play. Registration on Golf Genius is now OPEN! In the event of excessive numbers of entries, we may look at hosting the U12s Boys, and the Girls Championships, at other MD venues.

ELJGL Girls vs. St Andrews!

On Saturday the 28th March, a Team of 6 Girls ventured to the Jubilee Course at St Andrews for a match vs. the St Andrews University Ladies Golf Team. The University Team were led by their Captain, Kate Thomson,  a recent ELJGL Player from Dunbar. The 3 pairings consisted of Anna Zonova and Lydia Pickett vs. Louisa Forman and Palakshi Siingh, Chloe Adams and Phebe Pickett vs Helen Boyd and Abi Mitchell, and Maisie Witt and Louise Martin vs. Clara Goldstein and Meili Fabre-Marques. The St Andrews University raised 8 Players so together with Gareth Jack, former Longniddry Junior Convenor, I played against Kate and Jemima Bullock. The overall result was 2 matches each. After a round played in very windy conditions, with sand from the beach stinging our faces, we adjourned to the One Under Bar in the Rusacks Hotel for soup and sandwiches. We were grateful for the support of several parents, George Adam, Chris Martin, David Witt and most of the Pickett family! We anticipate having a return match in 2027 in East Lothian. Photos attached in order as per the Teams listed above with a stand-in from another Pickett sister for a St Andrews Player who had to leave! Dave Warren, Jt. League Secretary.
